Understanding the South Australian Government’s Rebates for Solar and Batteries

Do you know you can save $300 for every kWh of battery storage you install? The government has multiple schemes to incentivise switching to clean and green solar energy from traditional grid energy. If you want to know more about these schemes, this article is for you. Spare some time and read the whole article.

This article briefly discusses the “South Australia Home Battery Scheme” and the “Retailer Feed-in Tariff” available for solar panels and battery installers in South Australia.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Under the federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, residential premises and commercial premises that possess solar power systems generating up to 100kW can receive STCs for every megawatt-hour of renewable energy generated or displaced by a solar panel, provided the solar panel is approved by the scheme. STCs are determined with three main criteria in mind. Firstly, the total size of your residential or commercial solar system. Secondly, the rating of the solar zone you or your business is based in. Lastly, the number of years remaining until the scheme is phased out in 2030. Some of the benefits of obtaining an STC include a more substantial rebate provided by the government. Additionally, STCs can be bought and traded like shares on the stock market so it is possible the homeowner or business owner can generate extra revenue from the solar system by selling an STC.

Home Battery Scheme in South Australia

Under this scheme, the state government gives access to state subsidies and low-interest loans to all South Australians who are connected to the grid. This incentive is provided by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to help citizens equip themselves with solar battery solutions. The subsidy is available to all South Australians and is granted based on the kilowatt-hour capacity of the battery purchased for solar battery solutions. This scheme is also available to energy concession holders. They can avail themselves of more subsidies than others. Energy concession holders can receive $250 per kWh, while all other households can avail themselves of $150 per kWh. The maximum subsidy per battery installation is $2,000.

Retailer Feed-in Tariff

In addition to the upfront subsidy on batteries, you can receive a financial incentive for every kWh of energy you export back to the grid generated through solar energy solutions. Usually, solar panels produce more energy than is required. You can use solar battery solutions to store that energy or export it back to the grid. If you export it to the grid, this reduces the demand for electricity in peak hours. Moreover, it also helps in reducing electricity prices in Australia. The feed-in tariff in South Australia is set by the energy retailer and can range from 9.5 – 16c. The greater the rate, the more money you will earn when you export energy back to the grid. Some retailers that provide the best feed-in tariff are 15.0c Simple Energy, 12.4c by AGL, 12.4c by Power Direct, and 12.0 by Energy Australia.

Advantages of these schemes for homeowners

Some of the benefits of these schemes for homeowners are outlined below.

1. Save $300 for every kWh of the battery storage installation

These solar energy solution schemes provide an important opportunity for the homeowner to save $300 for every kWh of battery storage installation. This drastically reduces the installation cost of the solar system and the battery.

2. Earn some extra income by selling energy to the grid

Usually, solar cells produce more energy than one needs. Homeowners can save and store this extra energy in storage batteries or sell it to the grid. If you sell the extra energy to the grid, you can earn some extra income. Hence, you can turn solar energy solutions into a constant source of income.

3. Contribute to saving the planet earth

Last but not least, by switching to solar cells, you can play your role in saving planet earth. Grid electricity is generated using fossil fuel that emits carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming. By shifting toward clean and green solar energy, you can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint.

The South Australian government is providing subsidies and low-interest loans to expedite the transformation from grid energy to solar energy. This is the right time to install solar cells and batteries. Hence, if you plan to capitalise on this opportunity and want to install a solar system, then Unified Energy Solutions is the best solar system installation service provider in South Australia.
